Nagaland Churches want Christians to stay away from BJP, Hindu organisations

Nagaland Baptist Churches Council (NBCC) asked its followers to oppose every form of activity undertaken by organisations connected with Hindutva, citing they are challenging the ‘Christian’ faith in Naga society. This call was made during its 21st triennial convention held at Impur from February 2-4, 2018 and issued a resolution regarding this.

In this regards, on 9th Feb, the NBCC secretary Rev Dr. Zelhou Keyho has written a letter to political parties saying BJP and RSS has become unprecedentedly strong and invasive forces in the last few years.

The letter added that BJP in the central working tooth and nail to make its presence known and seen in Nagaland, the frontline of the Christian majority state in the country.

“Cannot we say, take everything from us but leave Jesus in Nagaland? Is your political party willing to sell Jesus for the sake of development?” the statement further added.

Later, the Angami Baptist Church Council (ABCC), the apex Baptistbody of the Angami community, endorsing fully with the NBCC’s resolution and issued a statement in support of them.

ABCC’s Rev. Dr. V Atsi Dolie in his statement “Today, the proponents of Hindutva are audaciously challenging our Christian faith, culture and values in variety of ways for which we are largely responsible.

 

“I call upon all the Angami candidates to reaffirm their allegiance to Jesus Christ, and I charge them in the name of God that it is their bounden duty, as Christians, to safeguard and uphold the Christian faith,” the statement from the reverend added.

In 17 August, 2017, The same NBCC also issued a letter asking Naga Christians to refrain from practising yoga by saying it is “a spiritual and physical discipline deeply rooted in the religious beliefs and practices of the Hindus”.
