Life convicts operating a petrol pump at Chanchalguda, Hyderabad have earned a profit of Rs four crore for the prisons department. This amount will be used for prison development.

The Indian Oil Corporation Limited petrol pump at Chanchalguda completed five years on Monday. “The petrol pump stands first in all oil stations across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in terms of revenue collected through sale of petrol, not including diesel,” Chanchalguda jail superintendent B Saidaiah said, adding that the annual turnover of the sale of petrol is Rs 100-120 crore.

Forty five life term convicts, as well as 16 released convicts work here in three shifts. The released prisoners get a monthly salary of Rs 12,000.

The life convicts who work at the petrol pumps are selected by a committee of officials. “The prisoner’s good behaviour, family ties and returning to the jail in time after parole are considered before recruitment,” Saidaiah said.

While no prisoner has ever made any attempt to escape from the Chanchalguda petrol pump, there have been instances where customers have misbehaved with them. “We do not take any cases of assault on prisoners lightly. The accused are attending courts,” Saidaiah said.As per jail rules, prisoners undergoing rigorous imprisonment, and those who work in factories run by the jail, currently get a daily incentive of `110. V K Singh, director general of prisons, has reportedly written to the state government to increase the amount to `250.

The achievement of the IOCL petrol bunk is that it stands first in AP and Telangana in terms of sale of petrol at any bunk. The sale is between 28,000 litres to 30,000 litres every day . The petrol bunk also stands at the eighth position at the all-India level in the sale of petrol.
