The Akhil Bharatiya Karyakarini and Pratinidhi Mandal of the Rashtra Sevika Samiti strongly condemned the recent incidents of violence against women in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal. The Samiti passed a resolution expressing deep concern over the plight of women in the state and calling for immediate action from the Union government and law enforcement agencies.

The resolution that was passed on February 25 noted that the incidents of rape and sexual assault in Sandeshkhali are a blot on the face of civilised society. It further stated that the inaction of the West Bengal government in providing justice to the victims is highly condemnable.

The incidents in the border areas of the 24 Parganas district have been witnessing escalating social tensions, fuelled by lawlessness, illegal infiltrations, and attempts to disturb population balance – posing a significant threat to the nation’s security. Despite strong condemnations from institutions like the Supreme Court, National Commission for Women, National Human Rights Commission, and National Scheduled Caste Commission, the State government has not only failed to take corrective measures but has also displayed a lackadaisical attitude.

The region has been witnessing increased social tension in recent years, with the atmosphere tainted by lawlessness, active participation of anti-social elements, illegal infiltrations, and attempts to disrupt the demographic balance. The failure of the state administration to protect women and deliver social justice is a matter of serious concern.

Despite the use of strong language by the High Court and various national commissions, the state government’s failure to take adequate action against the criminals and its attempts to communalise the entire issue reflect a derogatory mindset. The administration’s inability to safeguard women and ensure social justice is evident.

The gruesome incidents of rape and brutalisation of innocent women by offenders like Sheikh Shahjahan have been compounded by the state government’s inexplicable support for such criminals. The state’s indifferent attitude towards the victims, coupled with its efforts to communalize the issue, highlights the administration’s lack of empathy and accountability.

Expressing solidarity with the victimised women, the Rashtra Sevika Samiti strongly condemns the state government’s ineptitude and urges the central government, police, and investigative agencies to take swift and stringent action against all wrongdoers. The Samiti emphasises the need for immediate medical and psychological support for the affected women and calls for a comprehensive rehabilitation plan.

The Samiti extends its support to the brave women raising their voices against injustice. It assures them that women’s organisations across West Bengal and the country are ready to provide all possible assistance. The Samiti calls for an immediate end to the atrocities against women and appeals for justice and security for the affected.

The Rashtra Sevika Samiti stands united with the victimised sisters, reiterating its commitment to women’s well-being and social justice.
